Planning a trip for a large family—especially with an infant—is never easy. But when done right, it becomes a lifetime memory. Recently, I had the opportunity to curate a beautifully balanced journey for a family of 8 to Assam and Meghalaya, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience filled with nature, wildlife, and meaningful family moments.
The journey began in Kaziranga National Park, one of India’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. The family experienced both jeep safari and elephant safari, which were carefully planned to ensure comfort for all age groups, including the infant. One of the most thrilling highlights was spotting a tiger in the wild—a rare and exciting moment that elevated the entire trip. Alongside this, they enjoyed close encounters with one-horned rhinoceroses, elephants, and a variety of birdlife, all set against the misty backdrop of Assam’s grasslands.
From the wilderness, the journey transitioned into the serene landscapes of Cherrapunjee in Meghalaya. Known for its lush greenery and dramatic waterfalls, this destination offered a peaceful and refreshing experience. The itinerary was designed to be relaxed, allowing the family to explore at ease. They visited iconic spots like Nohkalikai Falls, admired the unique living root bridges, and enjoyed the cool, mist-covered valleys that define the region. It was the perfect setting to slow down and reconnect with nature.
The trip also included a spiritual and cultural stop in Guwahati, where the family visited the revered Kamakhya Temple. With proper planning, the temple visit was smooth and comfortable for everyone. The panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River and the calm atmosphere added a meaningful touch to the journey.
One of the most memorable experiences came at Dawki, near the India-Bangladesh border. The family enjoyed a boat ride on the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River, where the transparency of the water creates the illusion of boats floating in the air. They also visited the border area, which added a unique geographical and cultural element to the trip. This part of the journey was especially loved by everyone for its beauty and novelty.
Throughout the trip, special attention was given to comfort and convenience. Travel schedules were kept flexible, accommodations were family-friendly, and activities were chosen to ensure minimal strain while still offering rich experiences. Managing a group of eight, along with an infant, required thoughtful planning, and every detail was handled to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.
This Assam and Meghalaya itinerary proved to be a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration. From wildlife encounters to scenic landscapes and spiritual experiences, the trip created lasting memories for the entire family.
