Maldives Travel Guide

The Maldives is a tropical island nation best known for turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches, overwater villas, snorkeling, and diving. For most travelers, the simplest way to plan it is to choose between a luxury resort stay on a private island or a more local, budget-friendly stay on inhabited islands.

When to Go

The best time to visit is generally from November to April, when the weather is drier, seas are calmer, and visibility for snorkeling and diving is better. January to April is usually the driest stretch, while May to November brings more rain but often lower prices and fewer crowds.

Entry Basics

Tourist visas are granted on arrival for most visitors, so there is usually no pre-approval step for a leisure trip. Travelers must complete the IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival and present a passport with at least one month of validity, a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation, and sufficient funds.

Where to Stay

Luxury resorts are the classic Maldives experience, especially for honeymoons and special occasions, with overwater villas and private-island settings. If you want better value, local islands such as Maafushi or Thulusdhoo are popular for guesthouses, surfing, and day trips, with much lower accommodation costs than resorts.

Top Things to Do

  • Snorkel or dive coral reefs and lagoons.

  • Book a sandbank picnic or sunset cruise.

  • Try kayaking, paddleboarding, or catamaran sailing.

  • Visit Malé for a short city stop and local markets.

  • Go surf spotting on selected islands during the right season.

Practical Tips

The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but USD is widely useful in many tourist settings. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, and respectful dress matters more on local islands than on resort islands or designated bikini beaches.

Sample 5-Day Plan

  1. Arrive in Malé and transfer to your island.

  2. Spend day 2 snorkeling and relaxing at the resort or guesthouse beach.

  3. Do a boat trip on day 3 for dolphins, sandbanks, or reef sites.

  4. Use day 4 for diving, spa time, or a local-island visit.

  5. Keep day 5 flexible for weather, transfers, and a final swim.

Best Fit For

  • Honeymoons and luxury escapes: private-resort islands.

  • Surf, diving, and lower-cost travel: local islands and guesthouses.

  • Short breaks: 4 to 7 days is a common trip length
