New Zealand (A Sensible Person’s Guide)

Or: How to Not Spend Your Entire Holiday in a Car

Welcome to New Zealand

New Zealand looks small on a map.

This is a lie.

It is, in fact, a long, stretched-out collection of mountains, coastlines, volcanoes, and winding roads that will politely—but firmly—refuse to be “done” in a week.

Or two.

Or, frankly, in a lifetime.

A Quick Reality Check

Visitors often arrive with a plan like:

“We’ll just do Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, fly to Queenstown, pop into Milford Sound, then maybe Abel Tasman… in 5 days?”

You can do this.

But you will mainly experience:

  • The inside of a rental car

  • The existential nature of New Zealand roads

  • A growing suspicion that Google Maps is optimistic

The Golden Rule

Pick a vibe. Not a checklist.

New Zealand rewards depth, not speed.

Instead of trying to “see everything,” decide what you actually want.

If You Like: Culture, Food, and Slightly Sulphuric Air

Go North Island

  • Auckland — food, islands, wine, boats everywhere

  • Coromandel — beaches, bushwalks, subtropical paradise

  • Rotorua — geysers, Māori culture, and the faint smell of eggs (embrace it)

  • Hobbits — no explanation needed

Optional ambition:

  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing — if you enjoy walking through landscapes that look like Mars

If You Like: Mountains, Silence, and Saying “Wow” Every 12 Minutes

Go South Island

  • Queenstown — adrenaline, views, and excellent coffee

  • Lake Tekapo — stars so bright you’ll question your life choices back home

Must-do:

  • Milford Sound — it rains a lot (this is a feature, not a bug)

Time vs Distance (The Bit Everyone Ignores)

Driving in New Zealand is not like driving in Europe.

Distances are measured in:

  • Curves

  • Sheep

  • Sudden scenic stops you didn’t plan for

Rule of thumb:

  • If Google says 3 hours… it’s 4

  • If you stop for photos… it’s 6

  • If you’re enjoying yourself… you won’t care

A Much Better 7–10 Day Plan

Option A: North Island (Civilized Pace)

  • Day 1–3: Auckland (+ island trip)

  • Day 4–6: Rotorua

  • Day 7: One big scenic walk or nothing at all

Option B: South Island (Postcard Mode)

  • Day 1–4: Queenstown

  • Day 5: Milford Sound

  • Day 6–8: Lake Tekapo

Final Advice (From Someone Who Lives Here)

  • You will not “finish” New Zealand

  • You will miss things — and that’s fine

  • The best moments are usually unplanned

If you find yourself rushing… you’re doing it wrong.
