Summary

A first-hand family travel guide to Sri Lanka based on real experiences travelling with two teenage daughters. Discover scenic train journeys, tea plantations, leopard safaris, historic cities and coastal escapes while avoiding common mistakes and maximising family enjoyment.

Why Sri Lanka Surprised Us

Having travelled extensively across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Sri Lanka remained one of the destinations that exceeded expectations.

Many families think of Sri Lanka simply as a beach destination. In reality, it offers one of the most complete family travel experiences available anywhere in Asia.

Within a relatively small island, you can experience:

  • Ancient kingdoms

  • Tea plantations

  • Mountain railways

  • Wildlife safaris

  • Beaches

  • Colonial heritage

  • Exceptional hospitality

For families travelling with teenagers, the diversity is particularly important.

Teenagers often lose interest when a holiday focuses on a single activity. Sri Lanka keeps everyone engaged because every few days the scenery changes completely.

Days 1–2: Colombo

Most visitors treat Colombo as a transit city.

We recommend spending at least two days.

This allows the family to recover from the flight and experience modern Sri Lanka.

Highlights include:

Gangaramaya Temple

One of Colombo's most interesting temples and a great introduction to Buddhist culture.

Galle Face Green

Perfect during sunset.

Families gather, children play, and food vendors create a vibrant atmosphere.

Colombo Food Scene

Some of our favourite family meals were in Colombo.

Teenagers particularly enjoyed:

  • Kottu Roti

  • Hoppers

  • Fresh tropical juices

  • Seafood restaurants along the coast

Days 3–4: Kandy

The drive from Colombo into the hill country marks the beginning of a completely different experience.

Kandy feels cooler, greener and more relaxed.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

One of the most significant Buddhist sites in the world.

Even teenagers who normally dislike museums often find this experience fascinating because of the history and ceremony involved.

Royal Botanical Gardens

An excellent family activity.

The giant trees, orchid collections and walking trails provide a relaxed half-day experience.

Cultural Performances

Traditional Kandyan dance performances remain one of the best ways to introduce younger travellers to local culture.

Days 5–6: Tea Country and Nuwara Eliya

This was arguably the highlight of our trip.

The Train Journey

The train between Kandy and Ella is frequently ranked among the most scenic railway journeys in the world.

For good reason.

The journey passes through:

  • Tea plantations

  • Waterfalls

  • Mountain villages

  • Dense forests

The famous blue train became one of the most photographed moments of our entire holiday.

Tea Plantations

Visiting a working tea estate helped our daughters understand:

  • How tea is produced

  • The history of Sri Lanka's plantation economy

  • Why Ceylon Tea remains globally respected

Nuwara Eliya

Often called "Little England."

Cool temperatures provide a welcome contrast to the coast.

Days 7–8: Yala National Park

This was where the adventure truly began.

Many travellers associate safari experiences only with Africa.

Yala proves otherwise.

Leopard Safari

Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.

Seeing a leopard in the wild remains one of our family's most memorable travel experiences.

Elephants

Unlike zoos, seeing elephants in their natural environment creates a completely different appreciation for wildlife.

Luxury Safari Camps

Several camps combine adventure with comfort.

This makes safari experiences suitable even for families unfamiliar with camping.

Days 9–10: Galle

Galle provided the perfect ending.

After mountains and safari, the coast offered relaxation.

Galle Fort

A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walking through the fort feels like stepping into another era.

Sunset Walks

The fort walls provide some of the island's most spectacular sunsets.

Boutique Cafés

Our daughters particularly enjoyed:

  • Artisan ice cream

  • Boutique shops

  • Café culture

  5. Schedule safaris early morning.

Final Thoughts

Sri Lanka delivers exceptional value compared with many competing destinations.

For families with teenagers, it combines education, adventure, wildlife, culture and relaxation in a way very few countries can match.

It remains one of the destinations we would happily revisit.
