Inside Knowledge

Insider knowledge

Expert advice from people who've actually been there.

Northern Thailand rewards curiosity. Slow down, get off the main roads, and you'll find mountain villages, incredible coffee, winding roads, and some of Southeast Asia's most beautiful landscapes.

Chiang Mai: The Cultural Capital

Chiang Mai is the perfect introduction to the north. While the Old City temples are worth exploring, the standout experience is heading into the mountains.

Don't miss Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched above the city with sweeping views, especially around sunrise or sunset. For nature lovers, Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand's highest mountain, offers waterfalls, cloud forests, and cool temperatures that feel worlds away from the tropical south.

For coffee enthusiasts, the hills around Mae Rim and Samoeng hide exceptional cafés surrounded by jungle and farmland.

Hidden Gem

Visit Wat Pha Lat, a peaceful forest temple halfway up the mountain to Doi Suthep. It feels more like a secret jungle retreat than a tourist attraction.

Pai: Adventure and Mountain Freedom

Pai is where Northern Thailand truly comes alive.

The journey itself is part of the experience. Hire a scooter and spend a few days exploring the mountain roads, valleys, and viewpoints that surround the town. Riding through misty hills at sunrise is unforgettable.

The best stops include Pai Canyon, Pam Bok Waterfall, the scenic roads towards Ban Jabo, and countless unnamed viewpoints where you'll often have the mountains entirely to yourself.

Hidden Gems

Skip the crowded attractions and head towards the small villages north of Pai. The roads around Ban Jabo and the surrounding mountain communities offer some of the most spectacular scenery in Thailand.

For sunset, find a quiet ridge road rather than joining the crowds at the usual viewpoints.

Chiang Rai: Temples, Mountains, and the Mekong

Chiang Rai feels quieter, wilder, and more authentic than Chiang Mai.

The famous White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) genuinely deserves its reputation. It is one of the most imaginative religious sites in Asia. Nearby, the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) is equally impressive and often less crowded.

For a deeper experience, venture into the mountains around Doi Mae Salong, a former Chinese settlement surrounded by tea plantations and cool mountain air. The drive alone is worth the trip.

Hidden Gem

Explore Phu Chi Fa at sunrise. Standing above a sea of clouds as the sun rises over the mountains bordering Laos is one of Northern Thailand's most magical experiences.

If You Only Do Three Things

  1. Ride a scooter through the mountains around Pai.

  2. Watch sunrise above the clouds at Phu Chi Fa.

  3. Spend a day exploring the forests, temples, and viewpoints around Doi Suthep and Chiang Mai.

Northern Thailand isn't about ticking off attractions. It's about mountain roads, great coffee, unexpected conversations, and the freedom to follow whatever lies around the next bend.
