Athens - A City NOT to be missed

Curator's statement

Athens can sometimes be over-looked on itineraries, and it shouldn’t be! It’s one of my favorite cities in the world vibrating with modern life against the backdrop of a long history and deep culture. There’s so much to see and do.

Inside Knowledge

Insider knowledge

Expert advice from people who've actually been there.

Athens isn’t just a stopover—it’s a living, breathing crossroads of ancient history and modern cool. Few cities let you wander through millennia in a single afternoon, then end the night in a buzzing bar full of locals and artists.

Start with the icons. The hilltop Acropolis of Athens is the city’s crown jewel, home to the majestic Parthenon—a symbol of classical civilization. Just below, the Acropolis Museum brings ancient life into sharp, modern focus. Don’t miss the Ancient Agora of Athens, once the beating heart of public life, where philosophers like Socrates shaped Western thought.

But Athens isn’t stuck in the past. Neighborhoods like Psiri and Exarchia pulse with a youthful, alternative energy—think street art, vinyl shops, and op shops packed with vintage finds. By day, sip coffee in minimalist spaces or leafy courtyards; by night, these areas transform into a playground of funky bars and live music.

Food is where Athens truly shines. Traditional tavernas serve up classics like moussaka and souvlaki, often family-run and wonderfully unpretentious. For something more contemporary, the city’s new-wave chefs are reinventing Greek cuisine in stylish bistros and rooftop restaurants with Acropolis views.

Local life unfolds slowly—lingering lunches, late dinners, and long conversations spilling into the streets. Whether you’re browsing flea markets in Monastiraki or catching sunset from Lycabettus Hill, you’ll feel the rhythm: ancient soul, modern spirit.

Athens is not just a city you visit—it’s one you experience, layer by layer and the reason why I continue to return.
