There’s something about Meghalaya that doesn’t try to impress you — and that’s exactly why it does.
Shillong greets you like an old song. Familiar, calm, slightly nostalgic. The air feels lighter here, as if the city itself decided not to rush. But the real magic begins when you leave it behind.
Dawki doesn’t look real. The river is so clear that boats appear suspended in mid-air, like a trick your eyes are failing to understand. You stop talking. Everyone does. Because some places don’t need commentary.
And then comes Nongriat — not a destination, but a test. Thousands of steps down, into a forest that feels alive. At the end of it, the living root bridges stand there quietly, as if they’ve been waiting for you for centuries. No noise, no drama. Just existence.
Meghalaya doesn’t entertain you. It absorbs you.
Dawki’s Umngot River is so clear that boats appear to float in air. It’s best experienced early in the day when the water is calm and visibility is highest.
Boating here is the main activity, but simply sitting by the river and observing the surroundings is equally rewarding. The clarity of the water and the quiet environment create a rare sense of stillness.
