Inside Knowledge

Insider knowledge

Expert advice from people who've actually been there.

Phi Phi Islands are one of Thailand’s most iconic island destinations, set in the Andaman Sea between Phuket and Krabi. The main island, Phi Phi Don, is where hotels, restaurants, the pier, and nightlife are based, while Phi Phi Leh is home to famous natural sites including Maya Bay, limestone cliffs, lagoons, and turquoise water.

Why Visit Phi Phi?

Phi Phi is perfect for travellers wanting tropical beaches, longtail boat trips, snorkelling, island viewpoints, sunset drinks, and dramatic scenery. It can be romantic, adventurous, social, or restorative depending on how you plan it.

Best for: couples, solo travellers, wellness escapes, backpackers, small groups, snorkelling lovers, and travellers wanting a classic Thailand island experience.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is generally November to April, when seas are calmer and conditions are better for boat tours, beach days, and snorkelling. The rainy season usually runs from around May to October, but travel is still possible with more flexibility around weather and boat conditions.

How to Get There

Most travellers reach Phi Phi by ferry or speedboat from Phuket or Krabi. Phi Phi Don is the arrival point, with Tonsai Pier being the main entry area. There are no cars on the main tourist areas of Phi Phi, so expect to walk, use longtail boats, or stay close to your chosen beach area.

Top Things to Do

1. Visit Maya Bay

Maya Bay is the island’s most famous attraction, known for its white sand, clear water, and limestone cliffs. Access is regulated to protect the environment. Boats generally do not dock directly on the beach; visitors usually enter via Loh Samah Bay and walk in. Swimming is commonly restricted or not allowed, and visits are time-controlled.

2. Take a Longtail Boat Tour

A private or shared longtail boat tour is one of the best ways to experience Phi Phi. Popular stops include Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, Bamboo Island, and snorkelling spots around Phi Phi Leh.

3. Hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint

The Phi Phi Viewpoint is one of the best photo spots on the island. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and get softer light over the twin bays.

4. Snorkel in Clear Andaman Waters

Phi Phi has great snorkelling around reefs, lagoons, and smaller bays. Common tour stops include Shark Point, Bamboo Island, Pileh Lagoon, and areas around Phi Phi Leh.

5. Stay Overnight

Many visitors come as a day trip, but staying overnight gives you a much better feel for the island. You can enjoy quieter mornings, sunset boat trips, beach dinners, and less rushed exploring.

Suggested 3-Day Phi Phi Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive & Settle In
Arrive by ferry or speedboat, check into your hotel, walk around Tonsai Village, swim at Loh Dalum Bay, then enjoy sunset drinks or dinner by the beach.

Day 2: Island Boat Tour
Book an early morning longtail or speedboat trip to Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, and snorkelling spots. Return in the afternoon, rest, then enjoy a relaxed dinner.

Day 3: Viewpoint & Slow Travel Day
Hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint in the morning, have brunch, explore local beaches, book a massage, or take a quieter sunset cruise before departure or another overnight stay.

Where to Stay

Stay near Tonsai Village for convenience, nightlife, restaurants, and easy pier access. Choose Long Beach for a quieter beach feel with beautiful views. Pick more secluded resorts if you want privacy, retreat-style travel, and less noise.

Budget Guide

Phi Phi can suit different budgets. Backpackers can find simple stays and local food, while couples and retreat travellers can choose boutique resorts, private boat trips, and premium experiences. Expect prices to rise during peak season, especially from December to March.

Travel Tips

Book accommodation early in peak season. Choose early morning boat tours to reduce crowds. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag, swimwear, cash, light clothing, and good walking shoes for the viewpoint. Respect national park rules, especially at Maya Bay, as restrictions are designed to protect fragile marine environments. Maya Bay has had seasonal closures in recent years for environmental recovery, so check current access before booking.

Wise Mind Travel Recommendation

For a more meaningful Phi Phi experience, stay at least two nights, avoid rushing through the island as a crowded day trip, and build in time for rest. The magic of Phi Phi is not just the photos — it is the early morning light, quiet boat rides, warm water, island meals, and the feeling of being fully present.

Phi Phi is ideal for travellers wanting to retreat, reconnect, and rediscover.

Havana is not about rushing from attraction to attraction. Its magic is found in the music drifting through side streets, conversations with locals, sunset walks on the Malecón, old buildings full of history, and slowing down enough to absorb the atmosphere.
