Insider knowledge

Expert advice from people who've actually been there.

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, located on the Andaman Sea, known for beaches, island-hopping, nightlife, Thai food, temples, wellness retreats, and luxury resorts. It is one of Thailand’s easiest island destinations because it has its own international airport and a wide range of accommodation from budget stays to five-star resorts.

Why Visit Phuket?

Phuket is ideal for travellers who want a mix of tropical beaches, nightlife, culture, wellness, shopping, food, and easy access to nearby islands. It suits solo travellers, couples, families, retreat guests, luxury travellers, and people wanting a softer entry into Thailand island travel. The below image is from Nai Yang Beach situated just a five-minute drive from the airport, making it a popular first or last stop for travellers!

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Phuket is generally November to April, when the weather is drier and the sea is usually better for beach days, boat trips, snorkelling, and diving. The rainy season is usually May to October, with September often bringing heavier rain and rougher seas, although you can still get sunny breaks and better prices.

Where to Stay in Phuket

Patong is best for nightlife, bars, shopping, and a busy tourist atmosphere. Can be overwhelming for some!
Kata is great for couples, families, surfing in season, and relaxed beach stays.
Karon offers a long beach, resorts, restaurants, and a slightly calmer feel than Patong.
Rawai & Nai Harn are good for a quieter local feel, seafood, wellness, and longer stays.
Bang Tao & Laguna suit luxury resorts, beach clubs, golf, and higher-end travel.
Phuket Old Town is best for culture, cafés, street art, Sino-Portuguese buildings, and food.

Top Things to Do

1. Explore Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town is one of the most beautiful cultural areas on the island, with colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, cafés, markets, street art, boutique shops, and local restaurants. It is ideal for a slower cultural day away from the beaches.

2. Visit the Big Buddha

The Big Buddha is one of Phuket’s most recognisable landmarks and offers panoramic views across the island. Dress respectfully, as it is a religious site.

3. Beach Hop

Popular beaches include Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Nai Harn, Surin, Bang Tao, and Freedom Beach. For a lively scene, choose Patong. For a more relaxed day, try Nai Harn, Kata, or Kamala.

4. Take a Phang Nga Bay Trip

Phang Nga Bay is famous for limestone cliffs, sea caves, emerald water, and James Bond Island. It is one of the best day trips from Phuket and works well by speedboat, longtail boat, or kayak tour.

5. Visit Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Islands are one of the most popular day trips from Phuket, with Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, snorkelling spots, and dramatic limestone scenery. Check current access rules before booking, as some marine areas can close seasonally for environmental protection.

6. Enjoy Thai Food & Night Markets

Try local dishes such as pad Thai, massaman curry, tom yum, mango sticky rice, roti, grilled seafood, and southern Thai curries. Phuket Weekend Market, Chillva Market, and Old Town Sunday Walking Street are great for food and shopping.

7. Wellness, Retreats & Slow Travel

Phuket is excellent for yoga, massage, detox retreats, beach walks, meditation, spa days, and mental reset travel. For Wise Mind Travel-style trips, Phuket works well as a retreat base before or after visiting nearby islands.

Suggested 5-Day Phuket Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive, check in, beach swim, sunset dinner.
Day 2: Phuket Old Town, cafés, temples, Sunday market if available.
Day 3: Phang Nga Bay boat tour with kayaking and island views.
Day 4: Beach day at Kata, Nai Harn, or Bang Tao, followed by massage or spa.
Day 5: Big Buddha, viewpoint, seafood dinner in Rawai, or a sunset cruise.

Getting Around

Phuket has airport taxis, private transfers, Grab, local taxis, tuk-tuks, rental cars, scooters, and the Phuket Smart Bus. The Smart Bus runs from Phuket International Airport toward major beach areas including Patong, Karon, Kata, and Rawai.

Budget Guide

Phuket can be budget-friendly or luxury depending on your style. Patong and Old Town offer more budget options, while Bang Tao, Laguna, Kamala headlands, and private pool villas suit premium travel. Prices are usually highest from December to March.

Wise Mind Travel Recommendation

For a balanced Phuket experience, stay at least 5 nights. Combine beach time, island hopping, Thai food, massage, Old Town culture, and one slower day with no major plans. Phuket is best when you do not rush it.

Phuket is perfect for travellers wanting to retreat, reconnect, explore, and transform.

Havana is not about rushing from attraction to attraction. Its magic is found in the music drifting through side streets, conversations with locals, sunset walks on the Malecón, old buildings full of history, and slowing down enough to absorb the atmosphere.
