RIO DE JANEIRO
The Ultimate 10-Day Guide
Alma Libre Travel Agency · Solo & Couple Edition · Adventure meets Luxury
Before You Go — Essentials
▸ Best time to visit: April–June & September–November (cooler, less crowded)
▸ Currency: Brazilian Real (BRL) — always carry some cash
â–¸ Getting around: Uber is safe, cheap and reliable. Metro for Ipanema/Copacabana.
▸ Safety: Stay aware, don't flash valuables. Rio is vibrant and welcoming — common sense applies.
▸ Language: Portuguese. A few words go a long way — locals love the effort.
â–¸ Must-pack: Sunscreen SPF 50+, reef shoes, a light layer for air-conditioned restaurants.
Day 1 · Arrival & First Impressions
Settle in, feel the rhythm, let Rio come to you.
Afternoon Check in & decompress
Stay in Ipanema or Leblon — the best neighbourhoods for first-timers. Drop your bags, open the window, listen.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Book a hotel or apartment with a rooftop or ocean view. Waking up to that skyline on day one sets the tone for everything.
Late afternoon First walk on Ipanema Beach
Don't swim yet — just walk. Watch the volleyball, the vendors, the families. Ipanema at golden hour is one of the most beautiful things on earth.
Evening Dinner in Leblon
Head to Rua Dias Ferreira — the best restaurant street in Rio. Try Zaza Bistró for a creative Brazilian menu or CT Boucherie for stunning meat.
Day 2 · Christ the Redeemer & Santa Teresa
The iconic and the authentic, in one day.
Morning (early) Cristo Redentor — Corcovado
Take the train up through the Tijuca forest at 8am before the crowds arrive. Standing at the feet of Christ with the whole city below is a moment that never gets old.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Book tickets online the night before. The first train of the day gives you 20 minutes of near-solitude at the top.
Afternoon Santa Teresa neighbourhood
Rio's bohemian hilltop neighbourhood. Cobblestone streets, street art, colonial architecture and some of the best bars in the city.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Have lunch at Bar do Mineiro — a Rio institution. Try the feijão tropeiro and a cold Brahma.
Evening Sunset at Parque das RuÃnas
A ruined mansion turned cultural space with a 360° view over the city and the bay. Order a drink, stay for the sunset.
Day 3 · Sugarloaf & Botafogo Bay
Drama, views, and one of the world's great bays.
Morning Pão de Açúcar — Sugarloaf Mountain
Two cable cars up to the most dramatic viewpoint in Rio. Go mid-morning for the best light.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Skip the overpriced café at the top — have breakfast beforehand at Kosushi or a padaria in Botafogo.
Afternoon Botafogo & Humaitá
One of Rio's coolest emerging neighbourhoods. Browse the independent shops on Rua Voluntários da Pátria, grab a specialty coffee, explore.
Evening Dinner at Cozinha 505 or Slow Bakery
Both in Botafogo, both excellent. Cozinha 505 for creative Brazilian. Slow Bakery for something lighter and utterly delicious.
Day 4 · Tijuca Forest & Hidden Waterfalls
The wild heart of the city.
Full day Tijuca National Park
The world's largest urban rainforest sits right inside Rio. Hike to Cachoeira dos Primatas waterfall, or take the trail to the summit of Pedra da Gávea for breathtaking views.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Hire a local guide for this day — they'll take you off the main trails to places most visitors never see. Alma Libre can arrange this.
Evening Recovery dinner — Jardim Botânico
The leafy, upscale neighbourhood next to the botanical garden. Quiet, beautiful, and home to some of Rio's most refined restaurants. Try Olympe for a special evening.
Day 5 · Favela Experience & Lapa Nightlife
The real Rio — raw, creative, unforgettable.
Morning Vidigal or Santa Marta favela walk
Not poverty tourism — a genuine encounter with the communities that built Rio's culture. Go with a recommended local guide. The views from Vidigal over the city are extraordinary.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Avoid going alone. A trusted guide changes everything — you'll be welcomed, not observed.
Afternoon Rest & refresh
Rio nights are late. Use the afternoon to rest, swim, read on the beach.
Evening Lapa — the heartbeat of Rio's nightlife
The arches of Lapa light up at night. Start with a caipirinha at a street bar, find a live samba or choro show, and let the night take you where it wants.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Friday and Saturday are the best nights. Circo Voador and Rio Scenarium are iconic venues.
Day 6 · Ilha Grande Day Trip
Paradise, one hour from the city.
Full day Ilha Grande boat trip
Take an early boat from Angra dos Reis to the car-free island of Ilha Grande. Swim in Lagoa Azul, hike to Lopes Mendes beach (one of Brazil's most beautiful), snorkel in clear Atlantic water.
✦ Alma Libre tip: This is a full day trip — leave by 7am and return by early evening. Pack light: swimsuit, sunscreen, reef shoes and cash only.
Evening Quiet dinner in Ipanema
After a day in paradise, keep the evening simple. A long dinner at Capricciosa for wood-fired pizza, or sushi at Zuka.
Day 7 · Slow Rio — Museums, Markets & Maracana
Culture, craft and (optionally) football.
Morning Museu do Amanhã — Museum of Tomorrow
Santiago Calatrava's stunning waterfront museum in the revitalised port district. One of the most beautiful buildings in Brazil.
✦ Alma Libre tip: The surrounding Praça Mauá and Porto Maravilha district are worth exploring on foot.
Afternoon Feira de São Cristóvão
The largest northeastern culture fair in Brazil — music, food, crafts, energy. A completely different side of Rio from the beaches.
Evening (optional) Maracanã Stadium — Match Night
If there's a Flamengo or Fluminense game, go. Brazilian football in its home stadium is one of the great live experiences on earth.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Check the fixture calendar before your trip. Alma Libre can arrange tickets and transport.
Day 8 · Luxury Day — Spa, Yacht & Sunset Cocktails
Because the best trips know when to slow down.
Morning Spa morning
Most 5-star hotels in Ipanema and Leblon offer day spa access. Book a massage, use the pool, have a late breakfast. Do nothing efficiently.
Afternoon Private yacht or catamaran
A private 3-hour sail around Guanabara Bay — past Sugarloaf, past Niterói, past the islands. The city looks completely different from the water.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Alma Libre arranges private yacht charters. Sunset departures from Marina da Glória are particularly special.
Evening Fine dining — Roberta Sudbrack or Oro
Two of Rio's most celebrated restaurants. Reserve weeks in advance. Pair with a pre-dinner caipirinha at the bar of Hotel Santa Teresa.
Day 9 · Buzios — The Brazilian Riviera
One night away, one lifetime of memories.
Full day + overnight Búzios
Two and a half hours from Rio by car, Búzios is Brazil's answer to the French Riviera — 23 beaches, turquoise water, charming cobblestone streets and great restaurants. Stay one night.
✦ Alma Libre tip: Rent a buggy to explore the beaches independently. Ferradura and João Fernandinho are the most beautiful. Rua das Pedras comes alive at night.
Day 10 · Last Morning — Goodbye Rio
One final swim, one last coffee, and a promise to come back.
Early morning Sunrise on Ipanema
Set your alarm. Watch the sun come up over the Dois Irmãos mountains from the beach. Buy a coconut water from the first vendor. Sit with it.
✦ Alma Libre tip: This is the moment you'll remember when you're back home. Don't sleep through it.
Late morning Final breakfast — Confeitaria Colombo (Centro)
If you have time before your flight — a Rio institution since 1894. Art nouveau mirrors, pastries, coffee. A perfect last image of the city.
Afternoon Departure
Take Uber to Galeão (GIG) for international flights, or Santos Dumont (SDU) for domestic. Allow plenty of time — Rio traffic is real.

▸ Rio's neighbourhoods have completely different personalities — ask locals which to explore.
â–¸ The secret viewpoint: Morro do Leme, at the far end of Copacabana. Almost no tourists.
▸ For luxury, stay in Leblon — quieter, safer and more local than Ipanema.
â–¸ For adventure, base yourself in Santa Teresa for at least 2 nights.
â–¸ The best caipirinhas in Rio: Bar Urca, with your feet dangling over the bay wall at sunset.
