When people plan a trip from Osaka to Kyushu, the first thought is always the Shinkansen (Bullet Train). But as a traveler who has navigated 30+ countries over 15 years, I want to show you why the Meimon Taiyo Ferry is the ultimate "More for Less" move.
For just 10,720 JPY (approx. $70 USD), I secured transportation across Japan, a night’s accommodation, and a full dinner and breakfast buffet. Compare that to a 15,000 JPY train ticket plus a 10,000 JPY hotel stay—the math is simple: you save over 50% while upgrading your experience.
📍 The Route: Osaka Nanko Port ➡️ Shin Moji Port
This trip was a perfect example of my signature "A-In, B-Out" logistics. I flew into Osaka, took this overnight ferry to Kyushu, and eventually crossed from Shimonoseki to Busan, South Korea. By choosing the ferry, I didn't just save money—I kept my journey moving forward, turning a "transit night" into a highlight of the trip.
🛌 Room Options: Smart Savings for Solo Travelers
The beauty of this ferry is that it caters to every budget:
The "Tourist" Room (My Choice): Perfect for solo travelers and budget hunters. These are shared bunk-style cabins that are incredibly clean and offer much more privacy than a typical hostel. This is the "sweet spot" for saving money without sacrificing a good night's sleep.
Private Cabins: If you’re looking for a "premium deal," you can upgrade to a private suite for a fraction of what a 4-star hotel on land would cost.
🍽️ The "All-In" Experience
I highly recommend adding the Meal Package. For one low price, you get a full Buffet Dinner and a Buffet Breakfast. Waking up to fresh coffee and a view of the Kyushu coastline as you eat breakfast is the most stress-free way to start your day.
✨ The "Triple Bridge" Night View
The 19:50 departure (2nd sailing) offers a spectacular view you can’t get from a train. You will pass directly under three massive illuminated bridges:
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge: The world’s longest suspension bridge (about 1 hour after departure).
Seto Ohashi Bridge.
Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge. Pro Tip: The ship travels through the Seto Inland Sea, so it’s incredibly calm. Even if you’re prone to sea sickness, the water here is like a mirror. If you're extra sensitive, grab a cabin in the middle of the ship!
🚌 The "Hakata Hack": Getting to Fukuoka for Less
Once you dock at Shin Moji Port at 08:30, use the free shuttle bus to Kokura Station.
If your goal is Fukuoka (Hakata), don't rush for the Shinkansen. Instead, hop on the JR Local or Rapid train (Kagoshima Main Line). It costs about 1,310 JPY (~$9 USD) and takes around 80 minutes. It’s a scenic, cost-efficient way to finish your journey that saves you another 2,000+ JPY in surcharges.
🗺️ Exploring Kita-Kyushu (The "Arrival" Guide)
Before you head south, don't miss these local gems in the Kita-Kyushu region:
Mojiko Retro: A charming port area with beautiful 100-year-old architecture.
Eat "Yaki Curry": Baked curry with cheese and an egg—the ultimate comfort food of the region!
Kanmon Undersea Tunnel: You can actually walk from Kyushu back to the main island of Honshu through a 780m pedestrian tunnel under the sea.
Kokura Castle: A stunning landmark right in the heart of the city near the station.
💡 Let’s Plan Your "Ambitious" Trip
I’m not here to build a "profitable" trip for the industry; I’m here to engineer the most cost-efficient solution for you. I use every hack I’ve learned since 2010 to find the absolute lowest price for the highest possible experience.
Don’t ever think your travel ideas are "too ambitious" or your budget is "too tight"—just pass your vision to me, and let’s make it happen.
