Expert advice from people who've actually been there.

Two countries. One extraordinary coastline. And more biodiversity per square mile than almost anywhere on earth. This is the itinerary that surprises people most — because they arrive expecting a nice cruise and leave having seen something genuinely wild.

Why Panama & Costa Rica?

The combination of Panama and Costa Rica on a single voyage gives you something unique — you move between two of the most biodiverse nations on earth, punctuated by one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history. The Panama Canal is not just a transit point. It is a genuine spectacle.

On the Pacific side, Costa Rica's coast delivers dense rainforest, deserted beaches, and wildlife encounters that feel far removed from the tourist trail. Monkeys, macaws, sea turtles, crocodiles — and that's before you get in the water.

Highlights Not to Miss

• Panama Canal — Watching container ships navigate the locks from metres away. Scale and engineering on a level that needs to be seen in person.

• Costa Rica Pacific Coast — Zip-line through cloud forest, white-water raft, or simply walk into jungle that begins at the waterline.

• Corcovado & Osa Peninsula — One of the world's great biodiversity hotspots. Scarlet macaws, crocodiles, and howler monkeys before breakfast.

• San Blas Islands — Indigenous communities, pristine coral, and wildlife encounters impossible to replicate on the Caribbean side.

• Panama City — Colonial architecture, rooftop bars, and the best ceviche on the isthmus.

My Insider Tips

• Go ashore early everywhere. Wildlife activity peaks in the first two hours of daylight — a guide who gets you into the jungle at dawn is worth every penny.

• The Canal transit is the highlight for many guests. Position yourself on the bow. Bring a camera that can handle low light.

• In Costa Rica, do not try to see everything. Choose one experience — zip-line, river cruise, or beach — and commit. The guests who rush three activities in four hours see nothing properly.

• Pack light, quick-dry clothing and insect repellent. This is genuine rainforest. Dress for it.

Best Experienced By

Small ship with expedition-style shore excursions. The best wildlife areas are inaccessible to large vessels. The right small ship gets you anchored off beaches that don't appear on maps.

If you want a cruise that feels genuinely adventurous without being uncomfortable, Panama and Costa Rica is your answer. Let's talk about dates.
