Inside Knowledge

Insider knowledge

Expert advice from people who've actually been there.

The Islands of Tahiti are not a destination you visit once and forget. They are a destination that changes you, and as someone who has spent months living and working across the Society Islands, I can tell you that no amount of photography does justice to what you find when you get there.

Why French Polynesia?

French Polynesia is 118 islands scattered across an ocean expanse the size of Western Europe. Most visitors see only a handful, and that's the point. Each island has its own personality, its own pace, its own reason to visit.

Bora Bora gets the headlines. But the insiders know that Raiatea is where Polynesian civilization was born, that Moorea has the most spectacular lagoon in the Pacific, that tiny Huahine feels like Polynesia forty years ago, and that Taha'a — the Vanilla Island — is the most underrated stop in the entire archipelago.

Islands at a Glance

• Moorea — The most dramatic peaks in the Society Islands and a lagoon that glows turquoise from 30,000 feet.

• Raiatea — The Sacred Island — UNESCO-listed Marae Taputapuatea, the only navigable river in French Polynesia, and vanilla farms that scent the air.

• Taha'a — The Vanilla Island. Quietest, most authentic, most underrated. The coral gardens between Taha'a and Raiatea are world-class.

• Bora Bora — The postcard. Overwater bungalows, helicopter flights, and a lagoon that defies belief. Worth every dollar.

• Huahine — The hidden gem. Ancient marae, wild coastline, and a laid-back energy that most visitors walk right past.

My Insider Tips

• Book the lagoon wildlife tour in Moorea early — spinner dolphins, blacktip reef sharks, rays, and sea turtles in the same water. Year-round.

• In Raiatea, go to Taputapuatea Marae. Not because it's on the list , because it is genuinely one of the most significant places in human history.

• In Taha'a, order the poisson cru at the first roulette you find. Best meal in the Pacific, under ten dollars.

• In Bora Bora, the helicopter tour gives you the view no boat or beach can. If it's available, book it.

• Allow at least 7 nights. The islands reward slow travel. A rushed itinerary through French Polynesia is a missed opportunity.

Best Experienced By:

Small ship cruise. French Polynesia was built for intimate vessels that can anchor in lagoons, tender to remote motu, and spend two nights in Bora Bora rather than a breathless four-hour stop. Windstar's Star Breeze does this better than anything else in the market.

Ready to plan your French Polynesia voyage? I know these islands the way most people know their own neighbourhood. Let's build something exceptional.
