SOUTHEASTERN SARDINIA · 50 KM FROM CAGLIARI

Where the Sea Glows Turquoise

Villasimius crowns the southeastern tip of Sardinia — a town of fewer than 4,000 souls in winter that blossoms into tens of thousands come summer. Its coastline is a succession of wonders: white-sand bays, rocky coves, flamingo lagoons, and waters of extraordinary clarity preserved within the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area.

Here, Mediterranean scrub perfumes the hillsides above beaches used as film sets and commercial backdrops. The granite cliffs glow orange at dusk. Dolphins follow the boats. And the people — Sardinian to the bone — celebrate traditions 3,000 years in the making.

THE COASTLINE

A Crown of Beaches

Over twenty beaches, each with its own personality. From flamingo lagoons to granite-fringed hidden coves — this is Sardinia's finest coastline.

🦩

MOST FAMOUS

Porto Giunco

A wide arc of powdery white sand lapped by shallow turquoise water — and just behind it, the Notteri Lagoon where pink flamingos wade among the reeds. One of Sardinia's most iconic scenes.
🪨

MOST SPECTACULAR

Punta Molentis

A double-sided bay framed by ancient granite boulders — one of the most photographed beaches on the island. Accessible only by foot or boat, which keeps the magic intact.

🐠

MARINE RESERVE

Porto Sa Ruxi

Part of the Capo Carbonara protected area, lush with flora and fauna. The shallow, crystal-clear seabed makes it perfect for snorkelling and for families with children.

HIDDEN GEM

Spiaggia del Riso

Named 'Rice Beach' for its extraordinary sand: tiny white grains of granite quartz, polished by centuries of sea into something that gleams like scattered rice in the Sardinian sun.

🌅

FAMILY FAVOURITE

Campulongu

Long, gently shelving sands with calm, shallow water ideal for children. Faces east — arrive at dawn to see the sea turn copper and rose before the day begins.

🐢

BY BOAT ONLY

Isola dei Cavoli

A small island less than a kilometre from Capo Carbonara, sitting at the heart of the marine reserve. Wild coves, remarkable azure waters, and if you are like you could spot dolphins, and the very rare sea turtles.

SARDINIAN CUISINE

Food as a Way of Life

Ancient, proud, and tied to land and sea. In Villasimius every meal is a celebration — from morning pastry shops to long candlelit dinners with the day's catch.

🐷Porceddu

The crown jewel of Sardinian feasts — whole roasted suckling pig, crispy-skinned and fragrant with myrtle. A ritual, not just a meal.

🦪Fregola ai Frutti di Mare

Sardinia's own toasted pasta — tiny, irregular spheres simmered with clams, mussels, and saffron broth. Each grain absorbs the ocean.

🍅Sa Costedda

A moist & dense flatbread or focaccia created by using fresh tomatoes as the primary hydrating base instead of water.

🥟Raviolini fritti

Fried ravioli stuffed with fresh ricotta and lemon zest — crispy outside, cloudlike within. Found at local bakeries and festivals alike.

🐟Bottarga

Dried and cured grey mullet roe — shaved over pasta or simply eaten on bread with olive oil. Sardinia's answer to caviar, intensely saline and ancient.

🧀Pecorino Sardo

Aged sheep's milk cheese with a nutty depth. Eaten young with honey and fig, or grated hard over pasta. On every Sardinian table since the Bronze Age.

🍷Cannonau & Vermentino

Cannonau — one of the world's oldest cultivated wines — is bold and sun-soaked. Vermentino, crisply saline, is made for seafood and sea breezes.

Where to Eat

🍽 Sa Tankitta — seafood & pasta

🍽 Le Anfore — elegant local fish

🌿 Agriturismo Sa Bingia — traditional feast

☕ Local pasticcerie — morning sfogliatelle

🥂 Marina bars — aperitivo at sunset

🍕Aquarius — best pizza in town

Local Wisdom

Book for 9 PM — Sardinians eat late. The atmosphere and the freshest fish both arrive after sunset, when the heat lifts and the sea breeze comes in.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

3,000 Years of Stories

Beneath the azure surface lies a layered past — Nuragic peoples, Phoenician traders, Roman administrators, Spanish sailors. Villasimius carries all of them.

🏛

Museo Archeologico

Four rooms tracing 3,000 years — Nuragic settlements, Phoenician traders, Roman rule, and a Spanish shipwreck resting off Capo Carbonara.

🏰

Fortezza Vecchia

The old Spanish fortress on Capo Carbonara offers panoramic sea views and a reminder of Villasimius's strategic Mediterranean past.

Casa Todde Maritime Museum

A 19th-century farmhouse sheltering navigation instruments, maritime artifacts, and a glimpse of Sardinia's seafaring and rural heritage.

🪨

Nuragic Sardinia

Bronze Age stone towers found nowhere else on Earth. The surrounding countryside holds traces of this mysterious civilisation, 3,500 years old.

🎭

Folk Festivals

Traditional costumes, folk dances, and religious processions fill the summer. These are not performances for tourists — they are living Sardinian culture.

🦩

Notteri Lagoon

A strip of sand separates open sea from a flamingo lagoon so vivid it has been used for commercials and films. A genuine natural wonder, minutes from town.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

Everything You Need

Practical knowledge for a perfect trip — from a place that deserves to be done right.
✈️

Getting There

Fly into Cagliari–Elmas (CAG), ~50–60 km away. Rent a car — the coastal road is half the experience. Drive takes about 50 minutes.

📅

Best Time

June and September offer warm seas without peak-season crowds. July–August is full energy but busy and pricey. Spring hiking is magical.

🌊

On the Water

Snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, and boat tours around Capo Carbonara.

🥾

Off the Beach

Hike Capo Boi for panoramic coastal views. Explore inland Sardinia in autumn when roads empty and the landscape turns gold.

🏨

Where to Stay

Book early for July–August. Villas near the beach are the dream. Many hotels close October–May — confirm availability outside summer.

💡

Local Wisdom

Arrive at popular beaches before 9 AM or after 5 PM. Bring cash. Dinner starts at 9 PM — Sardinians eat late, and the best fish arrives after sunset.
